Insomnia

I honestly need a new alarm clock. As some people might know I have a few weeks off to take care of my brother, and part of that means getting up at 5 am to see him off to work (in case you’re wondering: my brother is 21 but at a mental age of about 16, and he’s slightly autistic). This morning, a phone call from my speech therapist woke me up. It was 9:45 and I had slept through everything, so it seems. I missed the 5am beep, I missed my brother going away, who (thank God) didn’t miss his alarm clock and was on time for work, and then I missed a whole bunch of snoozes, because at 9:45 my alarm clock was still switched on. The only way that happens is if I completely miss one hour of snoozing.

It’s not the first time this has happened. To be honest, it’s amazing I even got to work on time every day since I started my internship. The sound of my alarm is just too unobtrusive, too soft. It says on the sticker that it has ‘Soft Waking’, but it’s more like a lullaby to me. I prefer an alarm clock that sounds more like a hammer pounding on my brain, so at least it will wake me up. So today I have one goal: shop for a new alarm clock. One that doesn’t make me go insane about the time when I wake up.

  2. What works best for me are alarm clocks that:
    * Are digital
    * Give off high pitched beeps
    * Whose beeps grow in volume

    I can’t stand the ticking of a mechanical clock in the bedroom. Hence, I use both my cellphone and a so-called “trave alarm”. That way I’m sure to hear at least one of them.

    Good luck :)

  3. It just scared me as I woke up, my new alarm clock is that loud :P
    And hmm, it’s weird, but personally, I -need- the ticking of a mechanical clock in my room. I don’t know why, but utter quiet makes me lie awake, whereas the clock helps me fall asleep…
