Long ago, in 1998, I owned a Nintendo 64. At that point I was a geek at my school newspaper (we worked with Macs ^_^), and my friend the editor had this game [...]]]> I’ve never bought a console for one particular game. There were always several reasons for me to buy them. Until now.

Long ago, in 1998, I owned a Nintendo 64. At that point I was a geek at my school newspaper (we worked with Macs ^_^), and my friend the editor had this game for it, Ocarina of Time. Had I ever heard of Zelda? Nope, somehow it went completely by me on the NES and I never even owned a SNES. I borrowed it from him and was glued to the screen for a few weeks. I remember the awe at everything I saw in that game. Most of all, the world was so big! I was used to Mario 64 by then, which does have some big looking levels but the whole is still, for al intents and purposes, quite small. In Zelda I got my horse and found land as far as the Gerudos. I was thoroughly impressed. Later on in life, World of Warcraft would ruin that for me, by the way. No game world can ever look big to me now.

Not so long ago I decided to buy the game in the Wii shop, but the gameplay really sucks when you don’t have the original N64 controller. Then I found out that it was out, in 3D, for the Nintendo 3DS. I had to get it, and within about 4 days I had it.

The game is pretty awesome. They improved the graphics, for instance making bushes appear bushy instead of blocky. Tiny stuff like Link’s fairy and butterflies are incredibly detailed and it looks well-adjusted. In the story, nothing has changed. I was able to blindly find my way through the first 3 dungeons because I remembered them so well. All secrets and holes and heartpieces and fairy fountains are there, exactly where they used to be. The only addition to the game is a stone you can use to see into the future, giving you hints and tips on what to do next. The most awesome part is the addition of 3D mixed with the improved graphics. Just play a song on the ocarina and you see the most pretty effects, in 3D. And try walking through the twisted corridor in the Forest Temple, it’s brilliant.

I might be very much biased on this topic, but I can only recommend this game. If you loved it once and you’re longing for the same experience again, it’s great to be back. If you’re new to the game, it’s a must-have as well. But then I’m just a big Zelda fan ;)

Art and me have a love/hate relationship. On one side, I can love art a lot, but on the other I hardly understand any of it. As a result I find that I do not stand still enough to look at it. When I talk about art with people I know I get various responses from them, ranging from “oh I love art!” (i.e., they love to say they love art since it makes them look good) to “I don’t care about art, whatever does it do?”. That question is difficult to answer in short, but here comes Simon Schama, professor of art history at Columbia University. He can tell us all about art and what it does to the mind as well as to society, and he does so through the DVD series Power of Art.

Schama, a gifted narrator with an eye for detail, takes the viewer along on a path through history, in which he sketches the life and some important works of eight artists. They vary from Italian artists Caravaggio and Bernini to the Russian-American modernist Rothko. With an eye for theatre, Schama describes how van Gogh gradually loses his mind, or how Picasso went from having no interest in politics to painting Guernica. He paints a picture of the politics in the times of those artists, their social statuses and their underlying thoughts for creating their art.

What you get in an episode is a reconstruction of the artist’s life, done by good actors I must add, with the occasional narration by Schama, in person or as a voice-over. In the case of Rothko for instance, we do not only see the life of an intricate artist with a dark side, but we also experience a younger Schama entering the museum where Rothko’s work is for the first time. In all eight episodes the concept is similar: throughout the story of the artist’s life, Schama adds his own opinions and sidelong remarks about that artist and his art.

The style of narrating that Schama uses is very refreshing. His ability to sketch a situation that makes you feel you are there is almost scary. It is as if history is coming closer, because it is seen through the human point of view instead of the bigger picture that historians like to give you. The narrator imagines what certain events, like the fall of a painter in public opinion, must have done to the person, and builds further on that by looking at his painting in the way the public back then would have.

One can argue whether Schama’s presence throughout the series is a lot of help because he explains much about art, or rather a nuisance because he has a strong opinion and we do not always have to agree with him. Personally, I think his opinions about the artists under his attention, even though prominently present, do not pose an actual problem. I have found I disagree with him on a number of points, but then still it is very interesting to experience the views of a man who is passionate about art and likes to share that passion. So if you are interested in art but you do not know where to begin in order to comprehend it, Simon Schama’s Power of Art is a nice place to start out. Personally, I cannot wait until he makes a new series about eight possibly even more interesting artists.

Jack Burns is a little kid who has a twisted childhood. His father, William Burns, is an organ player who has left Jack’s mother Alice Stronach, a well-known tattoo artist. Together Jack and Alice travel across Europe to find his father. Alice finds work as a tattoo artist in several countries, and eventually they end up in Amsterdam, near the red light district. However, soon they have to give up because William has travelled to Australia, and they cannot follow him because they do not have the money.

Jack ends up in a neighbourhood full of girls and women. He goes to St. Hilda’s, an all-girls school in Toronto, and all the girls there expect him to become the same kind of ladykiller that his father allegedly was. There, a story of sexual abuse begins and Jack grows up experiencing many sexually harassing incidents. However, Jack does not see these incidents as abuse since he does not know any better. After St. Hilda’s he attends an all-boys school in Maine, where Jack’s list of awkward relationships begins. One friend he keeps from St. Hilda’s is Emma Oastler, who is moody, sensitive and whose weight changes like the weather. They start living together in Los Angeles and Emma becomes a successful writer while Jack gets parts as an actor, and his most famous parts are the ones in which he plays a woman.

At thirty-nine, Emma dies and Jack gets the rights over the script Emma has made of her best-selling novel. After the movie has been made, Jack decides to take a step back. A lot of his past is still unclear, and lost as he is, he decides to finally go look for his father. Along the way he discovers the lies his mother has told him, and what really happened to his father.

The storyline of Until I Find You changes along with the changes that take place inside Jack’s head. When Jack is four and knows nothing, the story remains sketchy, as if a lot of it is missing. As he grows up and becomes more aware of the gruesome childhood he has been through, the style changes to a wandering story, while Jack tries to remember who he is. Sometimes all chronology is lost because Jack remembers something from his childhood, and when he starts looking for his father he relives his youngest years as he finds out the truth about his dad. Because of these flashbacks the reader becomes aware of the reason why Jack is so apathic and sexually out of control.

Like the apathy Jack feels, the style of Irving’s novel is very factual and almost plain. A deeply disturbing event, such as Jack being raped by Mrs. Machado, is described in almost the same way as one would describe a day at the park. Since this way of writing reflects Jack’s thinking, this is an effective style indeed; one really gets the impression that Jack is indeed not horrified by what he goes through. This style changes along with Jack’s realisation of the horrors of his past, and the events of his present. Therefore the style keeps fitting in with the progression in the storyline.

Even though the description of the novel seems very long, it’s as short as can be while still doing justice to the intricately woven plot. Irving has included every detail, every little morsel of information, to add credibility to the whole. Jack’s relationships with his mother, Emma Oastler, his first girlfriend Michele Maher and his molester Mrs. Machado are complicated to say the least, and Irvings passionate storytelling makes it all the easier to identify with Jack. He has no influence at all on what happens to him in his childhood. The travelling in search of his father, the molesters at his school and Mrs. Machado, all the events take away a little bit of his childhood and he can’t do anything but watch. In that sense Irving has expressed a general truth: your childhood is not just yours to lose, it is taken away from you bit by bit through the doing of others.

Even though I should warn the weak reader about the fact that the protagonist’s life is perverted and filled with abuse, Until I Find You contains a myriad of feelings and sentiments which any reader can relate to. It is an epic story about the loss of childhood and the search for normality in life, and it is definitely a must-read.

Last Monday I decided to order the daily offer from iBOOD, which was a brand new iRiver S10 2GB mp3 player. Today I got it and I must say, it’s hard not to drool all over it.

I’ve always loved the look and feel of any version of the iPod, but looks matter less to me than sound quality and compatibility. In my eyes, iRiver simply beats the iPod on the last two subjects . The sound on the S10 is fuller and better than that on my iPod Shuffle (the same went for the N10 and the IMP400, both of which tragically died because I made an error), and there is no software needed to put music on my mp3player or take it off. My iPod Shuffle requires iTunes, which comes with Quicktime, which I don’t need on Windows since I have Quicktime Alternative, which has the added bonus of coming without iTunes, but ah of course: my iPod requires iTunes. I don’t know how to explain this better than I just did, but it’s probably clear that I distinctly hate iTunes.

I’d like to go into a huge rant about my hatred against iTunes, but I digress. On the S10 adding music is quite easy: it’s discovered as a memory stick and you stuff your music in the directory ‘Music’. It charges via USB, and when full it plays for about 8 hours. The controls are marvellous. I expected to find a touchscreen since I looked at some pictures of the apparatus and saw no real buttons except for the volume and on/off, but it’s better than that. The whole top of the device is a four-way clickable button with which you can skip forward, backward, into the menu, etc. The controls work almost the same as on my other two iRiver players: shortly pressing the menu button means you can scroll through your songs, and pressing the button long means you go to the main menu, with settings etc. I didn’t need the manual to understand that, and I’ve always liked the way it works. iRiver’s strategy here is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and in my opinion they kept the right features in.

Which brings me to the looks of the device. Even though I said it matters less to me than the other features, I’m still very much impressed with the sleek design of it. It’s smaller than a battery, and also thinner, it shines and the LCD is extremely pretty. When playing your music, a little music note starts dancing on the screen, to the beats of the music. It’s the cutest!

A few features I haven’t tried yet are the voice recorder, the radio (but to be brutally honest, I don’t much care for radio) and the ability to watch photos, but I’ll try those options out as well. So far I’m very happy with this device!

Haar eerste roman Fantastica vertelt het ogenschijnlijk luchtige verhaal van Roos de Leeuw, die een eigen weblog is begonnen en via de reacties mannen ontmoet, met wie ze soms een date heeft. Na een paar onschuldige dates is daar Jake, waar ze helemaal verliefd op wordt. Hij doet af en toe een beetje gek, en alle vrienden van Roos vinden hem geweldig.
Na verloop van tijd begint Roos te vermoeden dat er iets niet in de haak is. Jake wisselt steeds van baan, verdwijnt soms zomaar ineens en duikt dan weer op. Na een lange tijd van onzekerheid geeft Jake eindelijk uitleg: hij werkt bij Interpol. Roos is gerustgesteld .

In het begin lijkt Fantastica een boek dat vol staat met anekdotes over mannen die Roos ontmoet via haar weblog. Ze vertelt over haar onwennige date met Oskar en de geweldige seks met Sander. Als ze Jake ontmoet, lijkt hij op het eerste gezicht gewoon weer een date te zijn die uit het beeld zal verdwijnen. De eerste hoofdstukken zorgen voor afleiding en geven het idee dat er weinig diepgang in het verhaal zal zitten. Het boek begint bijvoorbeeld met Roos’ voorbereiding op haar eerste date, waarbij ze op het laatste moment nog moet omkleden. Daarna ondergaat de roman echter de geleidelijke verandering van chicklit naar psychologische thriller. Het boek verandert van toon en bouwt op naar een ingewikkelde ontknoping.

Deze roman gaat niet over Roos’ weblog, maar over de weblogster zelf en de gevolgen die daten via het internet kan hebben. Roos heeft een vervormd beeld van Jake doordat ze hem heeft leren kennen via internet, en ze weet niet of hij echt is zoals hij zich voordoet. De ervaren weblogster Roze geeft hier een lesje internet voor onvoorzichtigen; de mogelijkheden tot liegen en bedriegen zijn eindeloos. Wie kan controleren of je bent wie je zegt dat je bent?

Het gaat steeds slechter met Roos, ze stort emotioneel in terwijl ze de waarheid over Jake probeert te achterhalen. In feite heeft deze roman twee ‘ontknopingen’. Eerst vertelt Jake zijn verhaal over Interpol, waarmee Roos gerustgesteld is, maar daarna blijft er zowel bij Roos als bij de lezer iets knagen. Als zij ontdekt dat er nog meer dingen niet kloppen, dringt de ernst van de zaak pas goed tot haar door. Jake heeft nooit bij Interpol gewerkt. Hij is een pathologische leugenaar. De lezer ziet de leugens sneller aankomen, waardoor de naïviteit van Roos ook een grote rol speelt in de ontknoping.

Omdat Fantastica door een jonge vrouw verteld wordt, is het ook geschreven in een vlotte stijl die past bij de snelheid waarin de plot zich ontvouwt. De stijl die Jake gebruikt is al net zo vreemd als zijn voorkomen. Hij gebruikt uitdrukkingen als ‘boel koel’ en doet gekke dansjes en sprongen. Ook door middel van het onderscheid in stijl wordt duidelijk dat Jake anders is dan de rest. Hiermee schetst Roze een mooi contrast tussen waarheid en leugen.

Roze weet haar lezers helemaal het verhaal in te sleuren . Het is schrijnend om te zien hoe Roos probeert om Jake te ‘genezen’, terwijl ze zelf haar hele leven opgeeft. Ze ziet haar ouders en vrienden niet meer en gaat niet meer naar haar werk, ze zichzelf voor te liegen om hem te beschermen. Over een rapport van Jake’s psychiater denkt ze bijvoorbeeld: ‘Ik stel me voor hoe Jake in bed soms zijn eigen rapport leest in een poging zichzelf te leren kennen. Ik zal hem daarin steunen.’ Het is hetzelfde effect als wanneer een tienermeisje in een film alleen een donker bos in wandelt, als lezer zou je willen schreeuwen ‘doe het niet!’. Zoals de leugens van Jake zich langzaamaan verspreiden en vertakken, zo wordt de roman geleidelijk aan intrigerend. Fantastica is even briljant geschreven als Jake kan liegen, en liegen kan hij als de beste.

Martine Kamphuis heeft geneeskunde gestudeerd en werkt in de psychiatrie. Ze behandelt mensen met gedragsstoornissen en heeft hierover diverse artikelen geschreven. Vrij is haar debuut en gaat over een vrouw die moorden pleegt in de naam van de vrijheid en de liefde. De ondertitel luidt dan ook Serial killer uit liefde.

In deze thriller staat Linde centraal, een vrouw die vast zit in een huwelijk met de onberekenbare Henry. Tegen haar wil in ondergaat ze de seks en de kwade buien van haar man, totdat ze er genoeg van heeft. Ze besluit hem te doden, maar voor de buitenwereld moet het lijken alsof hij er met een andere vrouw vandoor is gegaan. Zorgvuldig zet ze alles in scène en het lukt haar om Henry te laten ‘verdwijnen’. Tegelijkertijd wordt ze echter verliefd op haar buurman, Ben, en hij voelt duidelijk ook iets voor haar. Alleen zijn vrouw Carolina houdt een relatie tussen hem en Linde nog tegen.

Het verhaal is in alle opzichten zorgvuldig uitgewerkt en de lezer kan zich inleven in de situatie waarin Linde zich bevindt. Ook als ze besluit om actie te ondernemen: ‘Ik keek naar hem en het was alsof ik hem honderd keer zag, duizend keer. Duizenden beelden van datzelfde boze hoofd, tienduizenden giftige spetters werden één groot, weerzinwekkend beeld. En opeens wist ik dat het moest stoppen. Dat ik er een eind aan moest maken.’ De nuchtere, koele schrijfstijl staat in contrast met de spanning van Lindes situatie, waardoor de spanning versterkt wordt.

Het is indrukwekkend om te zien waaraan Linde allemaal denkt, maar ook wat er aan haar aandacht ontsnapt. Haar nerveuze karakter, dat zij compenseert door goed toneel te spelen tegen de buren en Henry’s collega’s, zorgt ervoor dat iedere actie die zij onderneemt de spanning hoog opvoert. Linde denkt tijdens het plannen van de moord alles onder controle te hebben, maar vanaf het moment dat ze de moord pleegt zijn er een aantal spannende situaties waarin ze bijna ontmaskerd wordt.

Uit het verhaal, geschreven in dagboekvorm, komen ook haar hersenspinsels duidelijk naar voren. In het begin zoekt ze alleen naar vrijheid, maar geleidelijk verandert ze in een vrouw die geobsedeerd is door haar liefde voor Ben. Calculerend en gevoelloos overweegt ze om ook Caroline te vermoorden. Kamphuis geeft de lezer hiermee een intrigerend inkijkje in de gedachtewereld van een moordenares.

Dan is er nog de ontknoping, die onverwachts komt en van tevoren moeilijk te raden is. De lezer zit tot het laatste moment in spanning over wat er komen gaat. Ondanks alle complicaties lijkt Lindes plan toch te werken, maar pas aan het einde wordt duidelijk dat ze ontmaskerd wordt. Het wordt niet duidelijk of Linde en Ben samen verder zullen gaan en welke consequenties Lindes ontmaskering zullen hebben. Er blijft dus ruimte over om de fantasie de vrije loop te laten.

Het enige minpunt aan de verhaallijn is dat er veel herhaling zit in de (huishoudelijke) handelingen die Linde uitvoert. Ze is alsmaar aan het koken, schoonmaken en tuinieren om sporen te wissen, bezig te lijken of zichzelf af te leiden. Deze bezigheden doen vaak wat overbodig aan. Dat Linde iets te verbergen heeft wordt er op deze manier iets te dik bovenop gelegd. Bovendien wordt de spanning door deze herhaling minder.

Het is indrukwekkend om te zien wat er omgaat in het hoofd van een moordenares. De verhaallijnen worden perfect met elkaar verweven tot een onverwacht einde. In het begin lijkt ze gerechtvaardigd om deze moord te begaan en kan de lezer met haar meeleven. Pas als ze overweegt Caroline te vermoorden wordt duidelijk dat ze niet meer om haar vrijheid vecht, en weet de lezer dat hij meeleeft met een moordenares. Ook al is meteen bekend wie het gedaan heeft, toch weet Kamphuis het verhaal interessant te houden. Met Lindes berekenende karakter, de spannende situaties en de verrassende ontknoping blijft Vrij geniaal tot het einde.

The first was Motörhead, to which I went with my father and brother on tuesday the 28th. My pants were shaking quite literally, I could sense the vibrations. I’m not a connaisseur of their songs, so most songs all sounded alike, but once in a while it’s just important to get the shit blown out of your ears. The only Motörhead song I know, as do most people, is Ace of Spades, and surely enough, when they played that the audience around me made it a point to insert the phrase “THE ACE OF SPADES!” as often as they could possibly manage. Seeing old and young rockers alike, rocking their socks off to 3 old men who make more noise than one thousand vacuum cleaners, that is amazing. Somehow it is appalling as well, but still amazing.

On friday, Mark and I went to see Placebo, which also rocked but then in a very different way. At first we were standing way up front, in between the swooning teenage girls. Screams and shouts alone would make one go deaf. Even though the first hour of the concert was not perfect, I had an overall great time. I know the songs a little bit, but I can’t sing along with them as much as the rest of the audience (except on Taste in Men, that one I know by heart), so I spent my time staring at the people on the stage and wondering why the hell Brian Molko had shaved off his hair. I really loved their take on Running Up That Hill (I want more bands to cover this one, it rocks every time I hear it), and of course I yelled along when they did decide to play Taste in Men. All in all, those two songs alone were already worth my money.

Another outstanding fact: at both concerts the supporting act was brilliant. Motörhead had a band named Skew Siskin, which fitted in nicely with that same kind of hardrock, and Placebo had Howling Bells, a band with a really beautiful melodic sound and a female singer whose voice mediates between Heather Nova and Kate Bush (in my ears anyway).
